There are no tournaments in my immediate area, so I’m stuck with either A) P-Mode (which I do anyway) B)Playing Online or C) Playing the local yokel players who dont even know what they’re doing.

@yoshimattsu, it’s always been that way sadly. >_>

the previous podcasts had mirror dl’s and those worked well.

Yeah the mirrors always worked for me, but the first one after he stopped putting up mirrors worked for me no problem too. So I thought maybe it was a computer specific issue..

Kaz is a good counter for Steve because he can keep him at range easily using f+2, f+3, WGF. Does Kaz’ d/f+2 (mid, crumple KD on CH) duck Steve’s b+1 ???

Lee is a legendary character, u didn’t mention his f+4 which has great range considering it’s speed.. and his Acid Rain, f+3,3,3,3,4 – pretty easy to land.. excellent damage / priority & KD (I base my Lee game around fishing for this move) I’d say Acid Rain is on par with Steves b+1 & Kaz WGF

Bryan is strong, no doubt about that, but some of the comments are exaggerated?

Like if Steve’s pikaboo~launch (around i20) is limited to punishing anticipated whiffs then isn’t that the same for Bryan’s qcb+4 (i20 with perfect execution)? And [combo > oki taunt~JU into W! > wall tech catch taunt~b+4] yeah that’s insane on paper but in practice… even top players tend to just stick with taunt~f+2,1,4. Again, not saying that this isn’t good, just not as insane as people tend to say it is, which is probably why Bryan’s top 10 but not in top 5 in either Jap/Kor lists?

    • December 15, 2009 2:48 pm

It’s not exaggerated at all. When talking about a “character’s” strengths one should mention what the “character” is able to do, not what the “player” can do. Because that’s the exact same mentality a lot of people had back in the day with Bryan and taunt fb2 in DR days. “Oh it’s too hard, it’s impractical in a real match” then Knee comes along and rapes people with taunt fb2, sure it’s harder now, but it’s not impossible to do. There will always be someone out there that can take their character to their fullest potential.

        December 16, 2009 9:23 am

Even Naps said taung~JU is more of a flashy thing than a practical tool in an interview, and you’d also see other top Bryan players like Buriburi rarely attempting to use it, because it’s damn hard and it’s risky when it stuffs up, so those insane players who can win with it, well credit mostly go to the “player” rather than the “character”.

I mean all sorts of character comparisons / tier list etc. assumes that the players have equal skills right? I don’t see how assuming both players have sufficient skills to do [juggle > oki taunt~JU into W! > wall tech catch taunt~b+4~JU] can be a reasonable assumption… or a meaningful one… if 99.999999999% of tekken players are nowhere near that level then why consider it? It’s like saying Kaz is insanely good because with a player who can utilize his potential to the fullest Kaz can block almost everything and then punish hella hard, yeah the opposing side with equal skills block equally well but cant punish as hard, and don’t say no one can block and break throws that consistently because someone out there might come along and demonstrate how it’s done…. Or change the example to Zafina with her BD and d/f+2 or whatever example that involves “yeah hypothetically if the character is not limited by the player’s skills then the character is insane”.

I think most players discuss tier lists because they want to know whether players are advantaged or disadvantaged by using that character (well some just enjoy theory fighting…) so discussing what’s practical is always more important than discussing what is hypothetically/theoretically possible. Most Bryans, even good Bryans, stick with taunt~f+2,1,4 cause taunt~JU is not consistent enough to warrant the risk (unless you’re non-human). Taunt~JU only constitute a very small part of Bryan’s game. That should be noted.

Yuffie : All tier lists are 100% theory. If that werent true then nobody would ever win with low tier characters. Secondly, When doing a true, fair tier list, you have to completely exclude human error. Its the only fair way to judge a character. I agree with you that taunt JU is hard but ive most certainly had it done to me on many occasions, and by players who i can say are not the best bryans ive played.

If it can be done, someone will do it.

Also, I didnt even realise it till now but. Us putting bryan at 5th or so is actually factoring in the difficulty of taunt JU (un intentionally). If we assumed the player could do this everytime, That would without a doubt make brayn the best character in t6. So you see as we are all human, the human factor will be included no matter what we do.

Hmm, I honestly feel guilty for bringing the TZ discussion thingy over here so I’ll shut up after just saying a little bit more (>.<)

I know it's still "theory" in that it's not based on actual match results or anything (which has other issues) but that type of theory could be more realistic I believe? This is something that has also been put forward in those endless TZ 6br discussion threads.

I mean, tier list and all other theory stuff still involve things like risk-reward, consistency, range, tracking etc. which does suggest it takes into account "difficulty" otherwise range would only be an inssue for punishers and not for things like pokes or mix-up tools cause people could then argue with sufficient skill and not messing up the player should make sure he only use the move when he's in range, same goes for things like moves only track to one side or has horrendous whiff recovery, those are only factors that makes it more difficult for the player to apply the move consistently, cause these negative aspects of moves can all be eliminated if we assume unlimited skill. The fact that terms like "panic move" even exist in tier TZ's tier list also shows this point?

Also, I'm sure we're all aware that differnt +/- of characters should be weighted differently according on their actual impact on the game, but it's just that it'd be too difficult to do it properly… so say for example if a character has a ridiculous -10 standing and -11 WS punisher, or a poke, or anything that seems trivial by itself, but considering how often it comes into play, the advantages it gives accumulates…. compared to taunt~JU, even with perfect skills, that's still a 50/50 that only occurs when you did a launch or a W! (and Bryan's W! moves are slow so harder to hit although it leads to more damage) which occurs much less often… if you want to argue that Bryan can just run in your face and taunt~JU you then really, we're not assuming equal skills on both parties…

The audio quality is getting a lot better! I didn’t hear any static in the last couple of interviews.

  19. December 16, 2009 8:24 pm

For those who have been asking for the mirrors they’ll be uploaded soon, episode 5’s mirror has just been uploaded.

Going to take care of the rest some time soon.

Sounds cool to me. It’d be cool to hear about some of the Tekken Old Dawgs. Like i’m really surprised to never hear anything about the characters on the cover – not even about players who play with them.

But it was cool to hear about Bryan today. And there were names that you mention that i couldn’t put a face to. Right before you pulled open your PSP i had my PS3 on the character select screen like “Lee, Lee, Lee….Oh, him!”

Hey nice podcast, it’s really informative and fun to listen for the less knowledgeable tekken fans.
Also for the pcasts you do, if you add music to the them could you add a bit of info so we know what song/music it is. For example what song was at the outro of this cast?

    • December 17, 2009 10:00 pm

Hehehe it’s a secret. Nah, but seriously it’s by The Postmarks- Goodbye (Tahiti remix) . Chill song.

Definitely enjoyed this, and the previous one, too.
Also, the sound quality has improved greatly. Thanks for whatever you did.

If it ain’t too much to ask (so of course it is) if you know of any Feng players, or if you can squeeze in a little about him – honest thoughts or whatever, doesn’t have to be super anything – that’d be cool.

    • December 19, 2009 1:52 pm

Yeah definitely, whenever people leave comments on podcasts about what they want in a future show, I always keep those things in mind.

Just need to find the right person to discuss these things with, would be weird to talk about Feng if I’m interviewing a Ling player or something, haha. In due time, I’ll be looking to cover a lot more.

Cool, cool! Thanks MYK. No rush on that. I’m not sure that he’s a popular character. I don’t get that feeling he is so i can see it being kind of tough to compile insightful info on him.
